About Me

Hello! My name is Caleb Remocaldo and I'm a senior at Purdue University studying physics. My primary professional area of interest is in astronomy/astrophysics, although I am also very interested in machine learning, stock market analysis, software engineering, quantum computing, philosophy of science (and philosophy applied to science), and cryptography. On campus, I am a founding member and officer of the Undergraduate Physics Student Council (UPSC), brother and former vice president at Acacia fraternity, and cellist for the Purdue Philharmonic.

Academically, much of my time at Purdue I have been working under professor John Peterson to develop a software called PhoSim, short for "Photon Simulator". PhoSim is a set of fast monte carlo methods used to calculate the physics of both the atmosphere and a specified telescope to produce realistic images of space. Among many other things, PhoSim can be used to determine concentrations of dark matter in the universe, and is also a useful tool in predictive astronomy. You can read more about what projects I've done for PhoSim on the Projects page.

Currently, I am working under Dr. Chiu of the Purdue department of Psychology to program psychological experiments that Dr. Chiu designs. This involves heavy use of PsychoPy, a Python library meant to facilitate the creation of psychological experiments, as well as the more standard pandas and numpy. The most recent experiment I programmed involved testing the reaction time of subjects given various important and extraneous variables to keep track of. Specfically, subjects are shown a group of shapes and lines with various orientations and colors, and are asked to identify the target shape's line's orientation. More information about this project can be found on the Projects page.

With both of my parents in the military (my Dad in the Marine Corps, and my Mom in the Air Force), our family moved quite frequently in my childhood. I have lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., and finally "settled" in Indiana. Because of our regular moves, I am no stranger to change. In fact, I think I would quite enjoy moving around the nation (maybe the world?) somewhat regularly in my adulthood, though that is something that I'll address when the time comes, if it ever does.

My hobbies include playing the cello, listening to and exploring different musical genres, reading (mainly science fiction and the philosophy of science), developing scripts and programs for whatever project piques my interest, and spending time with my friends.

One of my hobbies in life is automation. I live for the process of classifying a given procedure into a set of rules and algorithms that a computer can process and use to output novel results.
